CHANCES ARE THAT NEW GUNS WILL SOON COME WITH A P&S INDEX FINGER REST.
I find it somewhat amusing, but not very, that some (on the web), just can't stop being critical of the P&S method, and the P&S index finger rest which is a very simple and practical aiming aid.
P&S isn't perfect, but P&S is the simplest means of Point Shooting.
Now I have no quarrel with other methods of PS. They work, while Sight Shooting, as based on scientific study of what happens in CQB situations, studies of armed encounters, police video cam recordings, and FOF training experiences, just doesn't cut it for CQ use.
However, most Point Shooting methods require taking physical actions such as using a specific grip, or stance, or body indexing, or thought directed and hand eye coordinated actions like putting the gun muzzle on a specific aim point, or visually and intently focusing on an aim point and shooting.
With P&S, there will be NO NEED to think about, or take the time to do any of those actions, or find, make, and/or check for a Flash Sight Picture.
You grip the gun, place your index finger along the side of a gun, as is standard practice, and point your index finger at a target. Then, if and as needed the trigger is pulled with the middle or left index finger.
That's all there is to it. Just point-n-pull, point-n-pull. No more, and no less.
And as the gun sights, barrel, and index finger work as one unit, the gun will be instinctively, automatically and accurately aimed at whatever the index finger is pointed at, and for each shot. As a plus, you will get/have a Correct Sight Picture.
In my opinion, P&S is the simplest and most basic Point Shooting method.
Also, Fairbairn and Sykes, the authors of the classic book Shooting To Live, and the US Army, in its Pistol Field Manual, agree that pointing/aiming with the index finger is instinctive, automatic, and accurate.
..........
Now, I understand that in our litigious States of America, products which can be/are deadly must have some means of "safe" use or the producer may be subject to legal action of some type, and/or the product banned.
For example, guns have a variety of safety features. And many if not most guns are sold for self defense purposes. And the guns have sights for use in aiming them and directing deadly force at targets.
But, here's the rub.
The gun sights can be used for accurate shooting, but as stated above, they won't be used or be able to be used for a variety of reasons in real life or death CQ encounters.
As such, and briefly put, guns have no means for aiming them and directing deadly force that can be employed in most all of the situations a buyer/user who bought one for self defense, may expect to be involved in.
"Such" products still may be sold/used if they can be "fixed" to provide for "safe use" by a buyer/user.
Well, the P&S finger rest, is a physical, tactile, and practical means for aiming a gun instinctively, automatically, and accurately at close quarters using the index finger.
So, in my opinion, adding of a P&S type index finger rest to guns will soon be the norm for handguns sold for self defense use.
I imagine that they will come with both sights and a finger rest for Point Shooting and/or Sight Shooting depending on one's situation.
You don't have to like this, but that doesn't change the situation.
Time will tell.
